Visto che ieri è stato il giorno della Jamaica, ho deciso che monopolizzerò questo thread,per un paio di pagine, con la musica che quell'isola ha esportato in tutto il mondo; stò parlando di Rocksteady, Ska e Reggae.

Se avete anche voi delle proposte postate ma alcune regole.

A) Reggae: solo early, roots...e mettiamoci pure skinhead
B) Absolutely No Ragamuffin.

Per chi vuole saperne un pò di più sulle origini storiche.

Il rocksteady, ska, e poi reggae, altro non è che il risultato di una commistione di generi, che, come per tutti i generi centro/sud/nordamericani, affondano le radici nella deportazioni degli schiavi.

In Jamaica in particolare, dominata dagli inglesi, gli schiavi contaminano il calypso centro americano con le loro sonorità dando vita a Mento, che è una forma di Calypso un pò meno dolce.

Negli anni 50 grazie anche alla diffusione delle radio e la ricezione delle stazioni radiofoniche delle vicine Miami e New Orleans, il Mento viene a sua volta influenzato dal RnB e Jazz americani, dando vita allo Ska, che poi si evolverà nel reggae che conosciamo tutti.

Adesso parliamo di Ska.

Non si può parlare di Ska senza parlare degli Satelites. Non si può parlare degli Skatelites senza parlare di Johnny McCook.

Nasce a Cuba da genitori Jamaicani (La madre si trasferì a Cuba per stare vicino al marito che lavorava alla costruzione del Canale).

Comincia a studiare il Sax da giovanissimo, ma è un viaggio negli Stati Uniti a cambiargli la vita. E lì infatti che conosce John Coltrane e che s'innamora del Jazz.

Ritorna in Jamaica con l'intenzione di suonare solo ed esclusivamente Jazz, ma l'incontro con un'altra figura leggendaria del movimento musicale Jamaicano, Count Ossie Williams, lo convince a dirigere una band di percussionisti rasta.

Nascono, nel 64 gli Skatelites.

Nel 75 il governo Jamaicano gli conferisce l'Order of Distinction, na specie del cavalierato del lavoro da noi, per il contributo dato al patrimonio musicale Jamaicano.
