Children who grew up during lockdown are arriving at primary school still in buggies, a new report has found.
The Centre for Young Lives, a think tank focused on the early years, estimated that a third of children entering education in 2022-23 were not considered “school-ready”.
This included their listening and speaking abilities, physical skills and health levels. It also concerned children’s cognition and social skills, such as being able to sit still, wait their turn, or use objects like a knife and fork.
Anne Longfield, the former children’s commissioner and the founder of the Centre for Young Lives, warned that many children were “at reception wearing nappies, still sitting in buggies and unable to properly communicate or socialise with other children”.
The report, which drew together research by eight universities, said that it followed “an alarming rise in early years developmental delays since Covid”.
It measured skill levels among children who were one or two years old during the first Covid lockdown and started school in 2022-23.
Ms Longfield said although more recent data are not yet available, anecdotal evidence suggests those born during the pandemic are arriving at school with more pronounced difficulties.”
Nel Regno Unito la scuola primaria inizia a 5 anni.
”Primary school education begins in the UK at age 5 and continues until age 11, comprising key stages one and two under the UK educational system. Some primary schools are split up into Infant and Junior levels. These are usually separate schools on the same site.”
